Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang) Function and Efficacy Recorded in TCM
Shu Di Huang is one of the most famous and commonly used nourishing medicines in traditional Chinese medicine, known as the “king of nourishing yin and blood” and the “essential medicine for nourishing the true yin of the five organs”. It is made by repeatedly steaming and sun drying raw Rehmannia glutinosa with yellow wine. Its medicinal properties have changed from cold to warm, and its efficacy has changed from clear to nourishing. Rehmannia glutinosa is the root tuber of the Scrophulariaceae plant Rehmannia glutinosa, which is processed. The medicinal properties are mild and sweet. Return to the liver and kidney meridians. The core function is to nourish blood and yin, nourish essence and fill marrow.

In short, prepared rehmannia is a pure “tonic”. Its main task is to supplement the body with the most basic and most essence substances – blood, yin, essence and marrow.

1. Nourish blood
This is the most fundamental and important function of Rehmannia glutinosa, which is the core drug of blood tonifying formula。

Used for various syndromes of blood deficiency:
Facial complexion: pale and lifeless.
Facial features: Dizziness, dizziness, palpitations (palpitations), insomnia.
Menstruation: Irregular menstruation in women, such as low volume, pale color, delayed or even amenorrhea.
Other: pale lip color, numbness in hands and feet.

Classic prescription: Siwu Tang (Rehmannia glutinosa, Angelica sinensis, Chuanxiong, Paeonia lactiflora), is the basic formula for nourishing and regulating blood in traditional Chinese medicine.

2. Nourish Yin
Shu Di Huang is the primary medicine for nourishing kidney yin, suitable for all syndromes of kidney yin deficiency.

Used for kidney yin deficiency syndrome:
Deficiency heat: Chao heat (periodic fever like a tide), night sweats (sweating after falling asleep at night), hand, foot, heart heat, dry mouth and throat.
Kidney essence deficiency: nocturnal emission, premature ejaculation.
Classic recipe: Liuwei Dihuang Pill (prepared rehmannia, cornus officinalis, Chinese yam, etc.) is the ancestor recipe for nourishing kidney yin.

3.Nourishing essence and filling marrow
Essence and marrow are the fundamental substances for human growth, development, and reproduction. Rehmannia glutinosa is thick and thick, which is believed to directly supplement these essence substances.

Used for severe cases of liver and kidney essence and blood deficiency:
Growth and development: Delayed development and delayed closure of the fontanelle in children.
Skeleton: Adult waist and knees are sore and weak, muscles and bones are weak, and teeth are loose.
Reproductive function: Male infertility and oligospermia, female infertility and premature ovarian failure.
Premature aging: Tinnitus and hearing loss, premature graying of hair, decreased memory, premature aging.

Classic formula: Zuo Gui Wan, used for severe cases of deficiency of true yin and essence.

Modern Pharmacological Effects of
Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang)
The modern pharmacological research of Rehmannia glutinosa provides rich scientific basis for its traditional effects of “nourishing blood and yin, nourishing essence and filling marrow”. Its pharmacological activity mainly comes from components such as iridoid glycosides (such as catalpol), sugars (such as digoxin polysaccharides), amino acids, etc. The following are the main modern pharmacological effects of Rehmannia glutinosa:

1. Promote hematopoietic function (corresponding to “blood supplement” in traditional Chinese medicine)
This is the pharmacological effect of Rehmannia glutinosa that directly reflects its “blood nourishing” effect.

Mechanism of action:
Can stimulate the proliferation and differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells and hematopoietic progenitor cells.
Promote the production of erythropoietin (EPO) in the body, thereby promoting the production of red blood cells.

It has a protective and restorative effect on bone marrow hematopoietic function damage caused by chemical, radioactive and other reasons.

Clinical application correlation: This scientifically explains why Rehmannia glutinosa can treat symptoms such as pale complexion, dizziness, and palpitations caused by blood deficiency, and has positive therapeutic significance for anemia, especially bone marrow suppression after tumor radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

2. Enhance immune regulatory function (corresponding to the traditional Chinese medicine concept of “nourishing yin and strengthening the body”)
Rehmannia glutinosa has a bidirectional regulatory effect on the immune system, mainly by enhancing immune function.

Mechanism of action:
Enhance cellular and humoral immunity: can improve the function of T lymphocytes and B lymphocytes, and promote antibody production.
Activate immune cells: enhance the phagocytic ability of macrophages.
Rehmannia polysaccharides are important active ingredients in regulating immunity.

Clinical application correlation: Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that “yin” is the material basis for the human immune system. Rehmannia glutinosa, by nourishing yin, can assist in regulating qi and enhance the body’s ability to resist diseases, which explains its traditional use for susceptible and chronic diseases.

3. Lowering blood sugar and its impact on metabolism (corresponding to “nourishing yin” in traditional Chinese medicine)
Mechanism of action:
It can lower blood sugar, and its mechanism may be related to promoting insulin secretion and improving insulin resistance.
It can also improve the complications caused by diabetes, such as kidney disease and osteoporosis.

Clinical application correlation: diabetes belongs to the category of “thirst elimination” in traditional Chinese medicine, and its basic pathogenesis is yin deficiency and dryness. The hypoglycemic effect of Rehmannia glutinosa provides pharmacological basis for its treatment of diabetes and is the core drug for lowering blood sugar in formulas such as Liuwei Dihuang Wan.

4. Antioxidant and anti-aging (corresponding to the traditional Chinese medicine concept of “nourishing essence and filling marrow”)
Mechanism of action:
It can effectively eliminate free radicals and reduce oxidative stress damage to cells.
It may delay cellular aging by regulating signaling pathways related to aging, such as NF – κ B.
Protect nerve cells and improve learning and memory abilities.

Clinical application correlation: The “essence” and “marrow” of traditional Chinese medicine are closely related to growth, development, and aging. The antioxidant and neuroprotective effects of Rehmannia glutinosa provide a basis for its treatment of “essence deficiency” symptoms such as premature aging, memory loss, and tinnitus.

5.Effects on the skeletal system (corresponding to the traditional Chinese medicine concept of “filling marrow and strengthening bones”)
Mechanism of action:
It can promote the activity of osteoblasts, inhibit the generation of osteoclasts, thereby increasing bone density and preventing osteoporosis.

Clinical application correlation: Traditional Chinese medicine believes that “the kidney governs the bone and generates marrow”, and sufficient kidney essence leads to strong bones. Shu Di Huang can “fill the marrow” and directly strengthen the bones, which perfectly confirms the traditional theory of “kidney marrow bone” integration.

6.Effects on the central nervous system
Mechanism of action: It has a calming and improving effect on learning and memory disorders.

Clinical application correlation: This is consistent with the treatment of insomnia, palpitations, forgetfulness and other symptoms caused by blood deficiency and kidney deficiency.

7.Other functions
Antitumor: Rehmannia polysaccharides exhibit certain immunomodulatory anti-tumor activity.
Anti inflammatory: It has inhibitory effects on both acute and chronic inflammation.
