Scrophulariae (Xuan Shen) Function and Efficacy Recorded in TCM
Xuanshen is the dried root of the Xuanshen plant in the Xuanshen family, and is an important heat clearing medicine in traditional Chinese medicine. Its nature is sweet, bitter, salty, slightly cold, and belongs to the lung, stomach, and kidney meridians.
Its core function can be summarized as “clearing heat and cooling blood, nourishing yin and reducing fire, detoxifying and dispersing nodules”. Especially skilled in treating diseases related to yin deficiency, excessive fire, and heat toxin stagnation.
1. Clear heat and cool blood
Mechanism of action: Scrophularia has a cold nature, enters the bloodstream, and can clear the pathogenic heat of the Ying blood.
Indicative symptoms:
Heat entering the bloodstream: In febrile diseases, it is manifested as intense body heat at night, restlessness and insomnia, a deep red tongue, and even delirium. Often combined with raw rehmannia, honeysuckle, coptis, etc., such as the famous formula “Qingying Tang”.
Blood heat spots: Due to excessive blood heat, the skin may develop purpura and rashes. It is often combined with plaster, cicadas, and other medications, such as “Huaban Tang”.
2. Nourish yin and reduce fire
Mechanism of action: Black ginseng has a moisturizing texture, enters the kidneys with salty and cold elements, nourishes kidney yin, and clears and reduces deficiency fire. This is its very unique and commonly used function.
Indicative symptoms:
Yin deficiency and fire excess: Used for dryness and pain in the throat, dry mouth and tongue, bone steaming and hot flashes (like heat seeping out of the bones), night sweats, etc. caused by kidney yin deficiency and excess heat. Often combined with raw Rehmannia glutinosa and Ophiopogon japonicus to form the famous “Zengye Tang”, it is used for constipation caused by yin deficiency, to “increase water and make boats” by nourishing yin.
Cough caused by lung yin deficiency: Used for dry cough with less phlegm, blood in phlegm, dry throat and hoarse throat sounds, often used interchangeably with lilies and Fritillaria.
3. Detoxification and dispersal
Mechanism of action: Scrophularia can clear heat toxins and utilize its salty, soft, firm, and dispersing properties to dissipate abscesses and phlegm nuclei.
Indicative symptoms:
Throat swelling and pain caused by excessive heat and toxins: Whether it’s wind heat cold or throat pain caused by inflammation due to deficiency fire, black ginseng requires medicine. Often combined with burdock seeds, Isatis root, Platycodon grandiflorus, and other ingredients.
Glacial galls:
Scrofula: refers to lymph node tuberculosis in the neck.
Gall tumor: Enlargement of nail like glands.
It is often combined with Fritillaria and Oysters to form the “Xiaoluo Pill”, which is a classic formula for treating lumps caused by phlegm and fire stagnation.
Purulent swelling and ulcer toxin: can be used to treat skin ulcers caused by heat toxicity, often used in conjunction with honeysuckle, forsythia suspensa, and dandelion.
Modern Pharmacological Effects of Scrophulariae (Xuan Shen)
The main active ingredients of Scrophularia ningpoensis include cyclohexene ether terpenoid glycosides (such as habagoside and habagoside), phenylpropanoid glycosides, flavonoids, fatty acids, and Scrophularia ningpoensis polysaccharides. The following are the main modern pharmacological effects of black ginseng:
1. Effects on the cardiovascular system
Hypotensive effect: Scrophularia and its active ingredients (such as Scrophularia ethanol extract) have significant hypotensive effects on various animal models. The mechanism may be related to dilating peripheral blood vessels and reducing blood viscosity.
Protecting myocardium and resisting myocardial ischemia: Scrophularia can increase coronary artery blood flow, improve myocardial blood supply, have a protective effect on myocardial ischemia injury, and slow down heart rate.
Antiplatelet aggregation: Scrophularia can inhibit platelet aggregation and has a certain anti thrombotic ability.
2. Anti inflammatory and immune regulatory effects
Anti inflammatory: Scrophularia extract has significant inhibitory effects on various experimental inflammatory models, such as xylene induced ear swelling in mice and carrageenan induced paw swelling. This is highly related to the traditional “clearing heat and detoxifying” effect.
Immune regulation:
Xuanshen polysaccharides can enhance the phagocytic function of macrophages and improve the non-specific immunity of the body.
At the same time, it has inhibitory effects on excessive immune responses and inflammation, reflecting the characteristic of “bidirectional regulation”. This provides a basis for its use in treating inflammatory diseases such as sore throat.
3. Antibacterial and antiviral effects
Antibacterial: Black ginseng has varying degrees of inhibitory effects on various Gram positive and negative bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, and Salmonella typhi.
Antiviral: Studies have shown that Xuanshen has certain inhibitory activity against influenza virus, herpes simplex virus, and other viruses in vitro. This provides scientific evidence for its detoxification effect.
4. Hepatoprotective and choleretic effects
Liver protection: Components such as phenylpropanoid glycosides in Scrophularia ningpoensis have a clear protective effect against chemical liver injury (such as caused by carbon tetrachloride) and can reduce serum transaminase levels.
Lidan: can promote the secretion of bile, which is beneficial for the health of the liver and gallbladder system.
5. Antioxidant effect
The flavonoids and phenylpropanoid glycosides in Xuanshen have strong ability to scavenge free radicals (such as DPPH and superoxide anions), which can alleviate the damage of oxidative stress to body tissues. This is closely related to anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and cardiovascular protection.
6. Neuroprotective and Sedative Effects
Neuroprotection: The main active ingredient, gabagoside, has been proven to have neuroprotective effects and may have potential benefits for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease.
Sedation: Scrophularia can synergize with central inhibitory drugs such as pentobarbital sodium to prolong sleep time and exhibit central sedative effects. This is consistent with its traditional application in treating restlessness and insomnia caused by “heat entering the bloodstream”.
7. Hypoglycemic effect
Some studies have shown that Scrophularia extract has a certain hypoglycemic effect on experimental diabetes animals, which provides modern pharmacological basis for its treatment of “yin deficiency and thirst quenching” (similar to diabetes).
